What is Giclee
? How Giclee is done at VUAG ?
Giclee (ghee-clay) is a
French word which means literally "a spray of water" or "to
sputter”.
In the art language, it
means a way of reproduction. First, we used industrial digital camera to take
a digital file from the original artwork. It takes a few minutes to generate, not only 1MB, 5MB, or 10MB like regular digital cameras on the
consumer market, but a humongous hundreds-MB file. Then our artists will use computer software to make any
necessary modifications and corrections in all elements: color, light, contrast,
etc…
For media, we used only
archival-quality paper or archival-quality canvas to match the texture of the
original arts. For printer, we used precisely-calibrated industry digital
printer which uses multiple rows of separated color inks to output the
fade-resistant inks in fine mists of millions of colors.
Both our artists and printers experts are
constantly in quality-control checking the correct hues, values, densities,
saturation of the prints until the original-artwork-creator artist is satisfied with the results.
Finally, a Giclee print is approved and
released only when it is as close to the original artwork as it can be. Then it
will get multiple coats of protection varnish. The result is a museum-quality
and gallery-quality print. Many galleries and museums around the world display
Giclee prints nowadays.
In a nutshell, we used the high-tech
printing industry to clone the original artworks so that you - the arts lovers - can have many
options, and can enjoy arts at a fraction of the originals' cost.
How
long Giclee prints will last ?
Independent testing labs have reported that
Giclee can last about 50 years before the prints show any noticeable fade.
However, the testing was not done on Giclees which had an added coat of UV
protection, Plexiglas, or glass covering. The prints on canvas require no glass
or plexiglass protection. To assure a high standard of durability, our
limited-edition prints are printed with fade-resistant inks and are covered with a UV inhibiting laminate
(or varnish, if on canvas. Given these additional factors, it is estimated that
our Giclee prints can last up to 100 years without significant fade, if kept
out of direct, or strongly indirect, sunlight.
For maximum
longevity without fading, please do not display your prints in direct, or
strongly indirect, sunlight.
